"When We Were Trekkies #4: Modern Prometheans" by Joe Sikoryak
A continuing graphic memoir of five cosplayers in the early fan scene of the Seventies.
Our heroes book a weekend in New York City at the First Famous Monsters Convention in 1974, and learn some hard lessons about planning, finance and travel. Joined by a free-spirited classmate, their camaraderie is shaken, but the dealers’ room, celebrities and winning the top costume competition prize makes it all worthwhile. A chance meeting leads them into a paying gig that will test their artistic talents, performance ability and general people skills...
When We Were Trekkies is created by Joe Sikoryak, whose experiences at the first Star Trek, Famous Monsters and Comic Art conventions are the basis of this series. His memoir of fanboys at the dawn of conventions blends awkward adolescence, nerdish spectacle and a generous spirit of adventure. While certain details are fictionalized, the costumes, festivities and unbridled passions are completely authentic.
