After nearly two years and seven conventions, Jonny’s enthusiasm for
costumes is fading fast. The Star Trek Lives! convention was an overstuffed,
out-of-control mess that strained the boys’ resources and their friendships.
Worse, his flubbed attempt to impress fellow cosplayer Ani has left him
frustrated and embarrassed. He goes looking for sympathy from his old pal
Dean—and tells the tale of his “worst year ever.”
When We Were Trekkies
is created by Joe Sikoryak, who attended some of
the first conventions of the 1970s. His memoir blends awkward adolescence,
nerdish spectacle and a generous spirit of adventure. While certain details
are fictionalized, the costumes, festivities and unbridled passions are
completely authentic.
